Description
Background: Specialty Cable Corporation, a manufacturer specializing in wire and cable for military & aerospace, commercial aerospace, medical, industrial, energy, heating, and other demanding applications, needed a power supply with a wide current range to test their wire samples at high temperature conditions to ensure the wires are in compliance with military standards.
Key Specifications: Specialty Cable Corporation needed a constant current source capable of supplying a wide range of adjustable constant current, from 4.5 A rms. to 202 A rms., with suitable compliance voltage to test their sample wires conditioned at high temperatures.
Challenge: The required test current was very high (up to 202 A rms.), and the current range requirement was very wide (from 4.5 A rms. to 202 A rms.). Different sizes of wires have different impedance; therefore, the required output voltage also varies. (Please see the chart below.)

Solution: Amp-Line Corp. efficiently provided a model AL-500-CR-H/S AC constant current source, with three customized output ranges, to meet all of Specialty Cable Corporation’s test requirements. The customized output ranges are:
- 100 – 225 A rms. @ 2.22 V rms. compliance voltage
- 30 – 100 A rms. @ 5 V rms. compliance voltage
- 4.5 – 30 A rms. @ 16.67 V rms. compliance voltage


Conclusion: Amp-Line Corp. successfully delivered a custom AC constant current source that met Specialty Cable Corporation’s demanding specifications, fully covering their high and wide current needs.
